The Central Institute for the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage – Digital Library was established in 2020 with the aim of coordinating and promoting the cultural heritage digitalization programs of the Ministry of Culture (Articles 33 and 35 of the Presidential Decree of 2 December 2019, No. 169), thereby promoting the digital transformation of cultural institutions and sites.
It is a Directorate-level office with general management status, endowed with scientific, financial, organizational, and accounting autonomy.
Institutional Functions and Duties
Through specially established technical committees, the Digital Library develops the National Plan for the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage and oversees its implementation; it coordinates and promotes digitalization programs for the cultural heritage under the Ministry’s responsibility; conducts surveys on the state of digitalization of cultural heritage and related digital services; provides mandatory and binding opinions on all Ministry initiatives in the field, offering support to institutions in drafting agreements for the implementation of cultural heritage digitalization projects; and coordinates initiatives aimed at ensuring the cataloging of cultural heritage, in accordance with Article 17 of the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code.
