Digital culture, strategic communication, innovation: the Directorate General for Digitalization and Communication is born

Il Director General Andrea De Pasquale takes the helm of the new Directorate General for Digitalization and Communication, established by D.P.C.M. March 15, 2024, no. 57, as part of an overall reorganization of the Ministry of Culture, with the goal of coordinating, innovating, and strengthening the Administration’s digital and communication activities.
Designed to lead and coordinate the digital transformation of Italy’s cultural heritage, the new Directorate will be tasked with:

  • promote the digitalization and enhancement of cultural heritage
  • implement institutional communication strategies for a cross-cutting promotion of cultural initiatives
  • strengthen the Ministry's presence in the media and on digital platforms
  • coordinate technological innovation initiatives at the national level

“In a historical moment in which technological innovation is redefining the relationship between citizens and institutions, between memory and future, our task will be to ensure increasingly inclusive and secure access to the country’s cultural heritage,” says Dr. De Pasquale, “we intend to work to make Italy’s cultural heritage accessible in new, integrated, and participatory forms, enhancing the contribution of the Ministry’s internal professionals and promoting synergies with public bodies, universities, technology companies, and third-sector organizations.”

The new Directorate, within the Department for General Administration, is composed of two services:

Within it operates theCentral Institute for Digitization of Cultural Heritage – Digital Library.

The Directorate General for Digitalization and Communication represents the MiC’s response to the need to develop policies and projects that make Italy’s immense cultural heritage accessible, dynamic, and connected, in an era in which culture is increasingly experienced, shared, and discovered through digital tools.
