In Rome on December 10 and 11, 2025 the first General Forum on Digital for Culture will take place: Connecting Heritage, Building Futures at the Auditorium of the National Central Library of Rome. The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture – Directorate-General for Digitalization and Communication and by the Central Institute for the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage – Digital Library.
The General Forum on Digital for Culture were created with the aim of establishing a space for dialogue, coordination, and shared planning among public institutions, the research community, cultural and creative enterprises, and the developer community working in the field of cultural heritage digitization.
In particular, the main objectives are:
- promote a common strategy for the digital transition of Italian culture, in line with the actions of the NRRP and with European policies on innovation and open access to cultural data
- networking skills and best practices, fostering collaboration among Ministry of Culture institutions, research institutes, universities, technology companies, and sector professionals
- promote the use of digital technologies to enhance the preservation, valorization, and enjoyment of cultural heritage, including through artificial intelligence, augmented reality, 3D digitization, and interoperable platforms
- stimulate innovation and participation through initiatives such as hackathons and workshops, enabling the experimentation of concrete and collaborative solutions
- strengthen the digital culture ecosystem, particularly through projects such as Ecomic, the national digital cultural heritage ecosystem
The General Forum aim to be a starting point for building a common and sustainable vision of digital culture in Italy, where technology and heritage integrate to generate public value, knowledge, and innovation: they mark the beginning of a complex and ambitious journey involving institutional actors, experts, industry professionals, and developer communities.
The initiative includes a two-day conference, thematic workshops, and simultaneously, a technology marathon (hackathon). The latter, hosted at the Museo Nazionale Romano – Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, will also involve developers engaged in creating digital solutions for Ecomic, the Digital Culture Ecosystem, a project carried out under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan PNRR Strategies and Digital Platforms for Cultural Heritage (Investment M1C3 1.1).
The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, will speak at the opening day.
