The Ministry of Culture announces the launch of a social media communication campaign dedicated to the “Digitization of cultural heritage”, a project promoted by the Directorate-General for Digitization and Communication in synergy with the Digital Library within the framework of the PNRR Culture.
The campaign tells the story of the digital cultural heritage, highlighting the digitization processes of museum, archival, and library assets, together with other cultural resources. The content documents the technical and operational activities of the worksites, emphasizing their cultural and strategic value. The aim is to give visibility to the transformation underway in Italian cultural institutions and places of culture, showcasing the potential of individual projects and promoting greater awareness of the importance of the preservation, accessibility, and use of digital cultural heritage.
The initiative involves numerous thematic worksites distributed across the national territory. Of the 540 digitization worksites planned, 466 are currently active, 16 are completed, and 58 are in the activation phase. The activities are organized into several project areas: microfilm of manuscripts, paper documentation from archives and libraries, photographic archives, museum objects of historical-artistic and archaeological nature, graphic works (drawings, prints, engraved matrices), numismatic and medal collections, as well as digitization through advanced technologies, including High Quality and 3D. The overall objective is the production of 75 million new digital resources by 30 June 2026.
The digitized contents flow into Ecomic, the Digital Ecosystem for Culture which, thanks to its technological core consisting of the D.PaC, I.PaC and DPaaS systems, makes it possible to create and strengthen digital solutions using cultural data.
The social campaign, structured in 40 weekly posts, will accompany the public on a visual journey across Italy, showcasing some of the most significant digitization worksites in terms of the quantity and relevance of the digitized resources.
The “Digitization of cultural heritage” is part of the Next Generation EU Programme, within the PNRR Culture, under Mission 1 – Digitization, innovation, competitiveness, culture and tourism, Component 3 – Tourism and Culture 4.0, Investment 1.1 – Digital strategies and platforms for cultural heritage.
An unprecedented project in terms of complexity and financial scale, with a total investment of 200 million euros, of which 130 million allocated to the Digital Library for state public institutions under the Ministry of Culture and 70 million assigned to the Regions and Autonomous Provinces.
