The Map of Italian Digital Cultural Heritage

Publication date: 3/07/2026

Last updated: 8/07/2026

Online since June 26, the Map was developed as part of Ecomic, the digital ecosystem for culture carried forward by the Directorate-General for Digitalization and Communication of the Ministry of Culture and the Central Institute for the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage – Digital Library, and represents one of the main implementation tools of the National Plan for the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage (Pnd).

The Map integrates data from the I.PaC Infrastructure and from the mapping carried out by Share – pratiche di cultura al digitale, developed by the National School of Heritage and Cultural Activities and aimed at professionals in the Italian cultural sector to deepen their understanding of digital transformation approaches and projects. The census of digital heritage remains active. Participation by the widest possible number of institutions across the national territory is crucial for identifying and, in the long run, preserving digital cultural heritage.

Main features
Through an interactive geolocated map, the platform makes it possible to: explore digital collections and their connections to places and responsible institutions; filter by type, format, and owning institution; consult detailed information sheets for each collection. It also serves as a governance tool, providing the Ministry and cultural institutions with structured data on digital heritage.

Reserved Area for Institutions
Museums, archives, libraries, and cultural institutes can access a back-office to record, describe, and validate their own collections, through guided sections on institutional data, digitization, and cataloguing.

Data Lifecycle
The process follows four phases: collection, validation, publication (map and widget), and reuse via API and GeoJSON format.

How to Contribute
Interested institutions register in the reserved area (with OTP confirmation and password setup), download and send the enabling form to mappadelpatrimonio@cineca.it, and subsequently receive confirmation of back-office access.

The Map of Italian Digital Cultural Heritage is an initiative of the Directorate-General for Digitalization and Communication and the Central Institute for the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage – Digital Library of the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Next Generation EU under the PNRR Investment M1C3 1.1 "Strategies and Digital Platforms for Cultural Heritage."
